Chapter 9 is crazy because the mother is giving the step dad prmstion to hit/ beat up the daughter and the mother and the mother had to go to the hospital and the step dad said what I did to your mother is nothing compared to what I'm going to do to you that is why Carly is in foster care

I think Carley really hates living with the Murphy's. Also I think that mrs. Murphy is really open minded but Carley is secretive . Because she lies about how she has 2 heads and how she is the captain of the Hawaii skiing team. I think Carley's life is very sad.

Harry Lus said...

Liked how Lynda explained that Carley wishes that she wants to be the clip of a gun and I am guessing that she wants to be left behind beacause she hates her self and beacause the clip is not disposal so she will get put in the trash and get smushed in the recycling place and get smushed

I Though that carlys mother is stealing clothes from the salvation army because carly was wondering why there is
not anyone there.

Chapter nine was really interesting. In this chapter there was a lot of sarcasm one example is "I was born with two heads, so one was removed by surgeons" another example is oh ... I'm also perfecting my recipe for toatst". This was a great chapter.

In the beginning of chapter 9 Carley is apparently actually going to a actual store. She sits in the car with mrs Murphy. There talking about Carley. Of course Carley doesn't like that topic talking about herself because of her past moths of her and her mother and the craziness that's been going on in her family. I feel bad for Carley. I've learned the author puts a lot of sarcasm in the book like "I'm the captin of the Hawaiian ski team" see the sarcasm. The author also puts fragments for dramatic pauses in the books. Our class did close reading and we've found out a lot of stuff from one chapter

Megan said...

I thought that chapter nine contained a lot of sarcasm like when she said "ya sharp as a marble" and I personaly like how she uses a lot of sarcasm. Another example of sarcasm is " well I'm captain of the down hill ski team" and I found that very funny because well no one can ski in Hawaii because 1 there is no ski hills and 2 there is no snow. One of the simialies that I thought really reflected Carley's birth mom is "she held up her ice cream cone as if to toast me", I thought this really reflected her mom is because I can predict that her mom drinks a lot and when you drink you cheers people and since she was doing that it made me think of how much it joust she drank. I did not find this chapter being my favorite but it was still very interesting

Luke said...

I know that chaper 9 has lots of similes one of the similes that I liked was when she said that she was keeping tallys on the back of the dumb hero sign. The reason is like it is because it's like in some movies and real life when people in jail tally on the wall with chalk to tell them how many days they have been in jail.

Katie said...

I wonder why Carley thinks so much bad things about herself. I also wonder why she doesn't like mrs. Murphy.
I'd like mrs. Murphy!

Shubham said...

In chapter 9 Carly was being really sarcastic like when she said that she was born with 2 heads and that the surgeons removed the wrong one. She also thought about when she was with her mother the mother held up her ice cream and said cheers, this proves that she has been drinking too much and her mother was also stealing clothes from the salvation army.

I was so horrified reading the part about Carley's mother encouraging her to go 'shopping' through the charity bins. Did anyone else feel surprised to read the detail about 'late-night' trips to the bins?

I felt like that detail painted such a tragic picture of this character's life experience. Could you imagine jumping inside of a donation bin outside of Target, for example, in the dark, perhaps in cold winter weather, and finding clothes to wear to school?

Carley has endured a childhood full of pain and neediness. I feel such empathy for her situation, and I wish that she could have a mother who treats her with the dignity that all children deserve.

Does this remind anyone of the latest winners of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014?

Zach said...

I really like chapter nine "what a clip". I like chapter nine because Mrs. Murphy keeps asking Carley a ton of questions and I like how Carley's reaction is like a "whatever" reaction. I also like when Mrs. Murphy takes Carley actual shopping and when Carley has a flashback about when Carley's mom took her "shopping" and the simile of her sitting there like she was sitting there with a dotting saleslady. The sarcasm in the whole chapter was so funny like the one where she says "I'm the captin of the Hawian downhill skiing team." I wonder why Carley's mom made her go in a Salvation Army Dropbox? When her mom made a toast to Carley with her ice cream cone, I realized that people do that with wine. Did anyone else notice?

Madeline said...

Chapter 9 of One For The Murphies there were many things that took me by surprise.
In this part of the story Mrs. Murphy took Carley shopping! This may not seem to be a big deal to you but to Carley this was something she had never 'really' experienced.
The author writes "this is a far cry from my mother and I making late-night visits to Salvation Army boxes to shop" this shows that Carley not only had never experienced shopping, or buying clothes, but her mother had her STEALING! Could you imagian having to crawl into a donation bin late at night so you would have clothes to wear?

Isha said...

The was a long flashback in chapter 9. Most of the flashback was saying, that what Mrs.Murphy is doing is a lot different than what Carley's real mom used to do. In the text it was saying, "This is a far cry from my mother making late night visits to the Salvation Army drop boxes," Her mother would tell Carley to steal the clothes from the donation boxes! If I was in Carley's place, I would be happy that my new 'mother' is doing the RIGHT thing. Carley's birth mother must've done the wrong thing a LOT to make Carley miss her birth mother and think she was the cleverest mother around. Another part that I thought was very surprising was, Carley thinks she's NOT even a tiny bit special. I wonder why she would think all this? The last part I have a lot to say about is when Carley's mother toasted to Carley with an ice-cream cone, Carley was so young! What do you think about the story?

What a Clip…

Sahej said...

In chapter 9 I thought that Carley was being sarcastic a lot
One way she used sarcasm was when she said " In an actual store". She said that because her mother used to put her in the Salvation Army Dropboxes! And asked her for colors and sizes. I also think this has a lot of irony because in the text it said. "Back when I was little". And Carley is still little!

Lucas said...

I actually really like this chapter it has so much of Figuritive language and the other thing that surprises me or how Carly's mom encouraged her of going "shopping" in the charity bins to get stuff. That confuses me? Later they go out to McDonalds to get ice cream. Carly's mom gets an ice cream but Carly and here mom raises her ice cream like she wants give a toast and that probably means she drinks alcohol and beer and wine or something.

Tony El Nemer said...

Carley Remembered the good times she had with her mom. There not really good times ESPECIALLY when she "shopping" (STEALING) through the army crate bins I feel really bad for Carley. When they went to Mc Donald's when her mother said cheers :( I think I know what is one of the moms characters (alcoholic) what did you think?

Ciara said...

I was born with 2 heads." States Carley Connors in chapter 9 with sarcasm. She is going to an actual store and Mrs. Murphy starts a conversation by asking what's interesting about Carley Conners. Carley gets a very uncomfortable feeling and says in sarcasm "I'm captain of the Hawaiian downhill skiing team." Carley is happy she is going to an actual store because her actual mom would tell her to go to a Salvation Army Dropbox and grab clothes for her self, not Carley. Carley also knows what a clip of a gun is, I'm inferring Carley had experience with a gun.

Chapter 9 One For The Murphy's

This chapter has a lot of flash backs and sarcasm like "Officaily this is my fourth in captivity" this catches my attention because captivity is like in prison. One example of a flashback would be "this is far cry from my mother and making late night visits to Salvation Army drop boxes to "shop." I remember how she'd hand me a flashlight, hoist me into the bins, and then make requests for sizes and specific colors like how I was sitting with a doting sales lady and a catalog." Isn't that so ironic that Carley's the one getting the clothes and not her?

Zachary Williams said...

In chapter 9 the author used a lot sarcasm. "I was born with two heads." That is funny! I like the author because she uses metaphors and similes in the perfect way. My favorite author is Rick Riordan. He writes the Percy Jackson books.

So anyway, in chapter 9 Carley has a flashback and she remembers when she stole clothes out of a charity bucket for her mom!

My favorite part of this chapter was when Carley dove into the charity bucket and the mom was making requests for sizes and colors like she was sitting with a doting saleslady and a catalog. What was your favorite part?

Anthony said...

Chapter 9
In the chapter when she is going to a actual store. I do blame her if she does not want to talk about her life because it might be to emotional to talk about and if she talks about it she might cry and her mother always told her never to cry no matter what happens.why do you think that the mom would say that to Carley? How do you think Carley's mom grew up did she have a good childhood or a bad childhood that Carley is having right now

Deegan said...

In chapter 9 I was surprised to find that Carley's mother would have her steal out of Salvation Army drop boxes.
Then they would toast with ice cream at McDonalds and she said that this was the first time shopping at a real store.

Katelyn said...

This chapter was really interesting. Like when Carley flashbacks to when she was little and her mother would take her to the Salvation Army crates and looks through all the stuff. I inferred that in that sentence when it said "late night" it was at night so nobody would see them. There was also a lot of sarcasm. Like "I was born with two heads, so one was removed by surgeons. Unfortunately, they took the wrong one." I was confused though when Mrs. Murphy said "What a clip." and then Carley thought about the clip having to do with a gun. Why doesn't Carley want to talk her personality though? I didn't really understand that.

Anonymous said...

In chapter nine it was sad that the mom was giving permission to the step dad to hit Carly. I don't think that a caring mother would do that to her child. It was also crazy that Carly's mom stole from the Salvation Army bins, and would shove Carly in there so she would tell Carly to get her this and that. The crazy thing is that Carly still thinks that the mom still loves her, even after the horrible thing that she had done to her. I think that the mom is on the stepfathers side. It's all really sad.

Anonymous said...

Chapter nine was intense beause carly ran away. Did you guys think it was intense to?

Miley said...

My favorite part of this chapter was when Carly told Mrs. Murphy what her mom would do. I like when Carly says my mom would hoist me into the bins and she would get cloths.

Viola said...

Chapter 9 is really about Carley's past and what she thinks of Mrs. Murphy. She remembers when "she and her mother made late night trips to Salvation Army." And now Mrs. Murphy is taking Carley shopping. In an actual store. Carley thinks that Mrs. Murphy is nice. But she doesn't want to get to close to her. Because she still isn't her mother. Then who is?

Dylan said...

Chapter nine was good because there was a lot of sarcasm. One of them was "I was born for two heads." I thought that was really funny. Also why I thought chaper nine was good because mrs Murphy was really nice. She was because she brought Carly to the mall. That was the only mall that she has ever went to. I liked chapter 9.

Kelly said...

Chapter 9 was about Carley and mrs.murphy going shopping. It was weird for Carley because she shopped at Salvation Army drop box that is a charity. Her mom would shove her in the bin then request a size and color. After Carley would do that her mom would get ice cream and cheered her for doing that.

Lily Murphy said...

Chapter nine pg.36 Sentence-I feel out of a place without fast food containers kicked out of the way.
Why is there fast food containers in her car?
Maybe she was homeless
Or maybe she was just really messy.

Ann said...

One for the Murphy's is such a good book. I can't believe how much the mother abused Carley. I also can't believe how Carley's mother made Carley steal for her. It looks like Carley's mother has drinking problems because it said
She would get ice cream and toast Carley like they had accomplished something. One for the Murphy's is such a sad😒, happy😊, and emotional book.

Dennis McNamara said...

I can't believe how sad it is that she thinks that being the clip of a gun is good. I really start to wonder every pharagraph how much violence can one kid have in there life,I could never imagine wanting to be the part of the gun that hurts people! Carly has so many horrible flash backs in the chapter like when she says " and my mother would hold up her ice cream cone as if to toast me"what kind of mother would be so unhealthy AS IF!Carly must have been crushed by that. It's so disgusting that Carly had to jump into a bunch of donation boxes and feed her mother clothing like she was her maid. I wonder and hope that the Murphy's treat her beter in the next chapter? I think she will start to like the Murphy's more than that evil mother she had before.

Emma said...

Throughout chapters 9-11 Carley thinks back to when she was a kid and how she thought her mother was the best and smartest mother in the world, but as most of the people have noticed as they read the chapter was that the mother could be a little troubled. I noticed in the chapter that Carley mom was quite good to her. Meanwhile this was before Dennis came. I think Carley has never even been to a "real" store in her life before. Her mom used to take her to Salvation Army drop boxes to shop, and Carley would crawl in and get clothes for her mom. When Carley got into mrs.murphys car she thought it wasn't natural to not have fast food containers crowding her feet. I think since fast food is mostly very cheep that Carley "grew up" on it. Mrs. Murphy is the perfect lady because she said she had expieriance with foster care cause her "friend" was in it.

Lauren said...

My favorite part of the book is when Carley wanted to change the subject off of her. I liked this because I am like Carley I hate when the subject is on me. I also like when Carley is hoisted into the bins and is looking for clothes. It I feel bad that she is looking in the bin beacuse she dosent have a lot of money.

In chapter ten when michal earen brout up super poopy man carly started to bond with him and his brother.

Dominic said...

I don't know I forgot

Gabby B said...

Chapter ten was very funny. I like I when she stuffs all of the rolls in the booth and asks is there ulimited rolls. Also she makes fun of the waiters name his name is Rainer and she asks is your brothers name thunder. I can't wait until chapter eleven.

Viola said...

In the restraunt, it was pretty hilarious when Carley started making fun of Rainers name. I think the reason Carley does things like that is because when Carley is feeling uncomfortable, she uses humor to change the topic. In chapter 10,when Carley connected with Adam and Michael Eric, it must've been Carley's proudest moment. She is so caring and kind to spend that time to be "super high tops girl". She is probably now a role model to the two boys.

Harry Luz said...

When Michael Aron said super poopy man and when Adam said and I'm super butt man he started to bond with Michael because they never play with eachother

Megan said...

In chapter 10 of One For The Murphys when Carley was making fun of Rainer I thought that she was doing that because mrs.murphy bought her all those clothes and did all of these nice things for her and she didn't like that so she took out all of her anger on Rainer by making fun of his name and trying to order bread and water as if she was in jail or not even ordering at all. The one part that confused me was when Carley was playing superheroes with her two brothers. It confused me because Carley was actualy HAPPY. That's right Carley conners is HAPPY. It has never been heard of! I loved chapter 10 in one for the murphys, it is one of my favorite chapters in the book

Anonymous said...

I thought that it was hilarious when Michael Eric said that he was " super poopy man." They really seem to use bathroom words. It was funny how Carly said that " Rainer? Do you have a brother named thunder?" Chapter ten is really humerous and silly. Carly even blew a kiss to Rainer When it was time for them to leave. Carly asked Rainer to bring her mother back. How could he bring her mother back? Though I thought that it was good that carly was bonding with her little brothers. It's good that they are getting to kno eachother. Chapter ten was hilarious p

It was highlarios when Carly hade bonded with her little brother!

I think Carley is finally comfortable in Mrs. Murphy's house because she plays with Micheal Erick. I think she is happy with living in the Murphy's house. I also think Jack( Mr. Murphy) is happy with Carley. I think the family is happier now. Carley might actually like living in the Murphy's house.πŸ˜„πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜Š

Ann Titus said...

It was sooooo funny when Michael Eric started shouting that he was SUPER POOPY MAN😝 and when Adam started shouting that he was SUPER FART MAN😜. It was so sad that Carley made Mrs. Murphy cry!! It was also very funny when Carley started stuffing her rolls in the seat so they would get warmer. I can't believe that Carley would make fun of the waiter's name and cause such a commotion in the restaurant. How do you guys like the book?

Deegan said...

In chapter 10 my reaction to Super Poopy Man was that when Michael-Eric brought up Super Poopy Man with Adam the three of them started to bond.

Aishwarya said...

In chapter ten Mr.Murphy comes home and gives Carley a look. He goes upstairs and Mrs.Murphy follows him and Carley follows them and overhears how she made Mrs.Murphy cry. When she hears Mrs.Murphy come down she rushes down to the living room. Soon Michel Eric comes down and taps Carley on the knee and asks "Do you play? Like ever?" Carley replies and ask what games and he says superheroes. Michel Eric now says how he is super poopy man. They now start to play superheroes Michel Eric is still super poopy man and Adam is now Red Sox man. Carley is the bad guy and her name is super high tops girl. They are all from planet oblivion. Mrs.Murphy sees them bonding and starts to smile again at the end f the chapter Michel Eric goes to bed but before he does he kisses Carley's knee.

Luke said...

What I thought of this chapter was that that is was the funniest chapter ever because when she just started shoving the bread down the sides of the side of the booth and then when she makes fun of Rainer and then says do you have a brother named lightning. The other thing is why would she play with the boys? The weird this is that she started off as a villen but then turned into a good guy!

Dylan Lemay said...

Chapter ten was really funny because when they played superheroes there names were really funny. The names where super poopy man, fart man, and high tops girl. Those are the worst made up names I have ever heard. Where was Daniel the whole chapter? Was scared to show her face in front of Carly.

Emma said...

In the chapter titled super poopy man some madness starts happening. Mikel Eric the youngest Murphy asked if Carley wanted to play with them. Since mrs.murphy was standing right there she had to say yes. After Carley told Mikel Eric she would play with with him he screamed sooper heroes. Sooper heros is what he wanted to play. I will be sooper poopy man mikel Eric shouted out! Who do you wan to be? I will be super high tops girl Carley said looking sown at her shoes. Instead of them fighting imaginary bad guys Carley came up with the idea of her self being the bad guys and mikel Eric a ad his friend try to "fight" her. Carley, mikel Eric, and his friend played this game all the way up to dinner time.

I think that Carly likes the game that there playing.
Carly is starting to like the little one.

My reaction of super poopy man was... I thought it was so crazy. And it was super funny I was laughing so hard.

My reaction of Rainer was... I thought she was going to get kicked out of the restraint. And I thought it was super funny.

I liked when Carley and her foster brothers played the superhero game. I was surprised when she actually played the game though. I thought that she would have made an excuse. It was really interesting when Carley started teasing Rainer. I think that she was just releasing her anger on someone. It was really funny when Carley played the game with the brothers because of all of the cool superpowers they pretended to use.

Kate said...

I think chapter 10 was so funny. I like the part when Carley shoves the rolls down the side of the booth and asks for her mother and how she makes fun of the waiters name Rainer and if his brothers name is thunder. But My favorite part is when Carley plays High Tops Girl with her 2 little brothers and she actually likes playing with them. It's so funny when Michael Eric calls himself super poopy man!! So funny. But I know that Carley playing High Tops Girl with her 2 brothers really made a difference in the family. I can't wait to read more

In chapter 10 Mrs. Murphy took Carley out to dinner but this wasn't the best idea. Carley once again began to push away Mrs. Murphy's kindness/help and started to become angry with her for trying to be kind. In this chapter it made me laugh when Carley took the roles and started stuffing them in the seams of the walls, and under the cushions of the booth. I thought this was hummerouse, because of all the descriptive language the author used and I had a clear vision of this in my head. Could you imagian being at a restraint and seeing a kid stuffing roles into the walls?!

Lily Murphy said...

Carley really wanted to make up for what she did to Mrs.Murphy. She didn't just want to make mrs.murphy happy but she wanted to bond with her brothers like that's the only thing to do. Maybe now Carley and the older brother will not hate each other anymore.

Super poopy man was really funny!

Chapter 10 was filled with a mixture of many different things including funny ness, surprising ness, and sadness. As Mrs. Murphy takes Carley to a restaurant, Carley suddenly gets a feeling that makes her be so mean to everybody near her. Not only does it hurt Mrs. Murphy's feelings, but it also unbarrases her. When Rainer, a waiter at the restaurant, approaches Carley, she makes fun of his name and says "hah, your names Rainer, do you have a brother named Thunder?!" Mrs. Murphy leaves right away after that event and supposivly crys without Carley knowing, but the next day Mrs. Murphy smiles because Carley is playing superheroes with Michele Eric, aka Super Poopy Man, and Adam, aka Fart Man.

Kelly said...

In chapter 10 Carley was bonding with the boys so she said let's play super heroes and Michal Eric was talking about super poopy man. Carley looked at her shoes and said I'm High Tops Girl and then she started of and told them to chase her until dinner. When Carley and Mrs. Murphy went out to eat Carley was stuffing bread down the window and the side of the seat so when the waiter asked what she wanted she said "My mother". That was a little sad.

Lauren said...

In chapter 10 I couldn't believe that Carley would do that to a person. Because making fun of somebody's name is not cool. And I was like after ms.murphy bought you these cloths why would you all of a sudden do you hate them. Snow I have a question for Carley why did you let ms.murphy buy you these cloths if you hate them all of a sudden. I think ms.murphy will still love Carley and won't let her go.

I think that in chapter 10 Carley went overboard to see Mrs. Murphy's reaction, I think this because in the book it said " I want to see her reaction, see her go berserk..

In chapter 10 for one of the Murphy's Adam and Michael Eric invented a super hero named super poppy man and Carly agreed to play super heros with them. And she named herself super high tops girl.

Chapter 10 was so funny! I love how there was so much enthusiasm. What really suprised me was when Carley and Mrs. Murphy went to the restaurant. Carley must've made Mrs. Murphy so EMBARRASSED when she stuffed the bread rolls between the seet and the wall! Then Carley made fun of Ranier's name by asking if he has a brother named THUNDER!!! Then Carley made Mrs. Murphy CRY! Then when they got home, Carley played with 'her' little brothers. They played a superhero game and Micheal Eric was Super Poopy Man!!!!!! Thus was a halairous chapter!!!!! πŸ˜‚

It is so weird how the two little boys wanted to be a bathroom supper heroes. So Carley was the bad guy and she was high tops girl. The two boys chased her entil they catch her. They are pretending that a rubber betal was the treasure that they needed to get back. Carley was teasing the waiter because she wanted to see mrs.Murphy cry.

In chapter 10 of One for the Murpheys, Adam and Michael Eric invented a super hero named "Super Poopy Man." Carley agreed to play super heros with them. Carley was the bad guy and her name was "Super High Tops Girl." It was nice of Carley to play with them.

In chapter 10 Carley insulted a waiter at a resterunt. The waiter's name was Rainer. She said "do you have a brother named Thunder?" Mrs. Murphey took Carley there. Carley was mad at Mrs. Murphey so she took it out on Rainer. Carley was mad at Mrs. Murphey because Carley wanted her mom.
